South Africa vs. Pakistan

Today South Africa was back in the record books. The victory over Pakistan was their first ever and South Africa?s first World Cup victory since the 2002 tournament where they beat Belgium for 13 th place.

What a comeback from our team. I?m incredibly proud of the boys for producing such a spirited performance after the disappointed of Thursday?s match against Australia. I think the answer to the question, ?what now?? which we faced from reporters and fans alike was clearly answered in our performance today.

There were two main improvements for me. Firstly we played with far more control and precision. A part of the game we have sorely missed since we began our World Cup campaign against Spain. Secondly the chances we created, we took. At this level of hockey you can?t expect twenty chances to pick and choose from. If you play well enough to create five or six chances you need to take them.

So for those of you who may have missed the game live on SuperSport; here?s how the game unfolded.

Pakistan started a lot shaper than we did, putting more pressure on us than maybe we had anticipated. There pressure paid off in only the 6 th minute of the game when they edged over a bit of scrappy nine yard play. We created limited chances in the first half but looked far more controlled in our attacks, and handled their fast breaks well.

The half time score 0-1 (Pakistan)

For the first time in this tournament we were able to put together a fine second half performance. We attacked with patience and finished the chances we created, some of which were top quality. We opened our account with a PC variation which saw Justin Reid-Ross set Gareth Carr up to finish from two yards inside the circle. Gareth finished off the set piece superbly to make the scores level at 1-1. We scored another two goals in very quick succession. The first of the two was by Ian Haley who neatly played a bouncing ball into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. Just five minutes later Taine Paton scored an absolute cracker when he dived in front of Abbas to deflect a hard cross into the roof of the goal. Marvin Harper got his name on the score sheet again when he played a fine cricketing shot to a ball which pop up in front of him. These are the chances we have been missing in recent games and we were all justifiably excited to see it go in!

With the game all but won we soaked up a bit of pressure and tried to slow the game down as much as possible. Pakistan was able to convert two late chances in the 68 th and 70 th minute to restore some pride.

Final Score 4-3 (win)

What does this mean in the pool standings? If Australia can overcome Pakistan on Monday and we beat India we will play for 7 th and 8 th spot. I?m not even going to mention the other possibilities because in my eyes that?s all I am interested in, 7 th place.

Other results from our Pool: England helped us out by beating India 3-2, which keeps India on 3 points. In the game before ours Australia beat Spain 2-0.
